GUATEMALA: COFFEE TO BE REBORN

Launched in 2016 by the Lavazza Foundation in collaboration with the local association Verdad y Vida, the "Coffee to be Reborn" project embodies the commitment to women’s empowerment and community development.  It’s implemented in Alta Verapaz region, specifically targeting the villages of San Lucas Chiacal and San Cristobal Verapaz.

The project aims to support family-owned coffee businesses, with a particular focus on empowering women from the indigenous Maya Pop’omchi communities like Elvira Mó Salam: studying how to grow and sell coffee, she developed an autonomous source of income that allows her to contribute independently to her family prosperity.

To date, over 180 women like Elvira have been involved in the production and commercialization of coffee, achieving significant progress that has not only transformed their own lives but has also positively impacted their communities.  In the last five years, the project has led to the implementation of 18 new hectares of coffee plants and the installation of 3 stripping machines.

The Lavazza Foundation is mainly committed in supporting women and their local communities, promoting empowerment and inclusion in a long-term perspective.
