The Lavazza Foundation together with XFarm to optimize the water irrigation use for coffee cultivation.
The objective of the activity is to identify the optimal irrigation strategy for coffee plantations and to evaluate the water consumption per hectare compared to conventional irrigation techniques. By implementing Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, interconnected devices that communicate with a digital platform and a weather station, it was possible to monitor the water stress of plants. Using the XFarm app, the producer receives personalized recommendations on when and how much to water. During the two-year project, a 25% water saving and a reduction in related energy costs were recorded.
In the year of interest, 12 new farms were contracted, in which 12 xNode devices and 5 xSense devices were installed.
In total, 10 farmers were trained.
The xNode device is a sensor designed to monitor various environmental and agricultural parameters, such as soil moisture, temperature, and air humidity. Thanks to the wireless connection, xNode offers farmers real-time data on the state of their soil and crops, allowing them to make more informed decisions and optimize agricultural operations.
The xSense device uses cutting-edge technologies to collect detailed environmental data, including parameters such as light intensity, wind speed and atmospheric pressure. This data provides farmers with a comprehensive view of the weather and environmental conditions that influence plant growth, allowing them to adapt agricultural practices more precisely and effectively.
